阅读文本 / Reading text
This paper uses synthetic samples to demonstrate the processing method. The code has been verified using examples in an isolated environment; this does not guarantee effectiveness for all real files or products. Before processing important files, please retain the original copies and verify them against the boundaries and acceptance criteria specified in the text.
When building an automated document-processing pipeline, the most insidious failures are often not program crashes, but rather the silent generation of blank or garbled files. When using pypdf to process PDFs, opening an encrypted document does not immediately raise an exception,
PdfReader
Objects can usually be instantiated normally. However, if an attempt is made to access them without properly verifying the authorization password,
.pages
or extract the text; subsequently, the workflow may continue to run based on corrupted data, leading to irreversible errors in downstream tasks. The correct engineering practice is to perform an immediate check upon reading
is_encrypted
attribute, and according to
decrypt()
The return value strictly determines the decryption status; if no valid password is provided or verification fails, the task queue must be actively terminated, and attempts to bypass protection or launch weak-password dictionary attacks are strictly prohibited.
The underlying mechanisms of encryption detection and compliance decryption
pypdf’s support for encryption is explicit and strict: one must call
decrypt(password)
and entering the correct password are required to truly unlock the content.
is_encrypted
returns True only indicates that the file header has declared an encryption flag, and does not mean the content is entirely unreadable; whereas
decrypt()
The integer status code returned by the method is the sole criterion for determining whether legitimate access permissions have been obtained. According to the official pypdf documentation, the meanings of these return values are as follows: 0 indicates decryption failure (due to an incorrect password or unsupported algorithm); 1 indicates successful verification of the user password; and 2 indicates successful verification of the owner password. Many developers mistakenly assume that simply calling decrypt allows them to proceed with further processing; in reality, an incorrect password may result in some metadata becoming readable while the document body remains locked. Therefore, in a task queue, “non-zero decryption status code” should be treated as a mandatory precondition rather than an optional step. Furthermore, when dealing with the AES encryption algorithm, it is essential to ensure that the necessary components are installed.

dependency; otherwise, the decryption operation will fail outright.
synthesis example: Expected behavior and boundary input definition
To verify the logic without relying on external sensitive files, we define the following synthetic test scenario. Note: This section provides only a logical description; in the actual production environment, real business samples must be used.
input A (correct authorization)
: A PDF file encrypted with AES-256 and password "open-sesame".
expected output
:
decrypt("open-sesame")
Return 1 or 2; subsequent traversal is safe.
.pages
and extract the text; the task queue flows normally.
Input B (incorrect password)
: The same encrypted file, but with the password "wrong-pass" provided.
processing method
:
decrypt()
Return 0. At this point, a business exception should be thrown immediately, or the task should be marked as “requires manual intervention”; further calls must not be made.
.pages
. Even if some older versions of pypdf allow access to certain metadata, this should still be considered an unauthorized state to prevent the risk of data leakage.
input C (pseudo-encryption/empty password)
: The file header is encrypted but provides no actual content protection (rare but possible).
processing method
:
is_encrypted
is True, but
decrypt("")
may return a non-zero value. This situation still needs to be processed according to the encryption procedure, as it is formally considered an encrypted document. Automatically skipping it may violate compliance policies; it is recommended to log such cases and have them manually reviewed to determine whether they constitute mislabeling.
Python validation script: Constructing an encryption detection workflow in memory
The following code demonstrates how to securely detect the encryption status in memory, avoiding disk I/O and dependencies on external files. This example is intended solely for educational demonstration purposes and has not been executed in a real production environment. Before use, please ensure that it is installed in your own locked dependency environment.

from io import BytesIO
from pypdf import PdfReader, PdfWriter
def create_encrypted_pdf_in_memory(password: str) -> bytes:
"""仅用于测试的加密PDF生成器,生产环境请替换为真实文件流"""
writer = PdfWriter()
writer.add_blank_page(width=200, height=200)
# 推荐使用AES-256,避免使用不安全的RC4
writer.encrypt(password, algorithm="AES-256")
buffer = BytesIO()
writer.write(buffer)
return buffer.getvalue()
# 模拟任务队列中的加密检测钩子
sample_pdf_bytes = create_encrypted_pdf_in_memory("test-pass")
reader = PdfReader(BytesIO(sample_pdf_bytes))
if reader.is_encrypted:
decrypt_status = reader.decrypt("test-pass")
if decrypt_status == 0:
raise PermissionError("解密失败:密码错误或权限不足,任务已拦截")
elif decrypt_status in (1, 2):
print(f"解密成功(状态:{decrypt_status}),允许进入下游处理")
else:
raise ValueError(f"未知的解密状态码: {decrypt_status}")
else:
print("文件未加密,直接处理")
# 边界验证:错误密码应返回0
bad_reader = PdfReader(BytesIO(sample_pdf_bytes))
assert bad_reader.decrypt("wrong") == 0, "错误密码必须返回0"
This script encapsulates the core compliance-checking logic. In actual projects, it is recommended to integrate the aforementioned
if reader.is_encrypted
blocks are extracted as independent pre-processing middleware, ensuring that all documents entering the parsing stage have undergone authorization verification.
Acceptance Criteria and Manual Review Boundary Table
Observation of the phenomenon
processing decision
Note
is_encrypted=True
and no password was provided
task suspended, marked as “pending authorization”
prohibits automatic attempts using a blank password or a common password dictionary
decrypt()
returns 0
task failed; record the password hash (not plaintext)
could be due to an incorrect password, unsupported algorithm, or missing AES dependency
decrypt()
returns 1/2 but
.pages
throws an exception
transferred to human review
may be due to file corruption, special permission restrictions, or a PyPDF version compatibility issue
file has no encryption flag but its contents are unreadable
is treated as a parsing failure under normal parsing conditions
Not a cryptography issue; proceed with the general fault-tolerance procedure.
uses RC4 encryption and decryption was successful
is allowed to proceed, but the log issues a warning
RC4 has been proven insecure; it is recommended that the source side be upgraded to AES-256
decrypt("")
returns a non-zero value
Marked as “pseudo-encryption,” manually reviewed
To prevent omissions in compliance audits, automatic release is not recommended.
Note: This table applies only to code-level encryption status verification and does not represent end-to-end translation quality acceptance. If the document contains scanned images, complex formatting, or multilingual mixing, even if decryption succeeds, manual sampling is still required to verify the accuracy of the translated text. The code demonstration addresses only whether “legal reading is possible” and does not guarantee “semantic correctness of the content.”
