Let AI Work in Word, Excel and PowerPoint: The OmniDoc Document Interface

OmniDoc for desktop includes a standard MCP document interface. Connect Claude, Codex or another assistant and it can create editable Word and PDF documents, check the layout and revise them block by block. This guide covers what it does, the three-step setup and a first prompt.

Let AI Work Directly in Word, Excel and PowerPoint: Getting Started with the OmniDoc Document Interface Getting an AI assistant to draft a report is easy. Getting a file you can hand over as is is not: correct heading levels, tables with header rows, editable equations, and Word and PDF exports that keep their layout. Most assistants stop at a block of Markdown and leave the formatting to you. The OmniDoc document interface closes that gap: the assistant creates native, editable documents, sees how they lay out, and revises them block by block. What it can do Create native documents : write with semantic blocks (headings, paragraphs, tables, equations, figures), save as an editable .udoc, and export Word (.docx), PDF and lossless HTML in the same step. See the layout : every save reports the page count and layout issues (large blank areas, captions split from their figures, overflowing content), and pages can be rendered as images for the assistant to check. Revise block by block : insert, replace or move content in the existing file; set line spacing, paragraph spacing, indents and Latin and East Asian fonts in one pass; figure, table and equation numbers update automatically. Start from templates : built-in templates for Chinese journal papers, theses, reports, résumés and slides. Translate and publish : translate a file into more than 90 languages with the layout preserved, or publish it as a public web address (requires an OmniDoc account). Creating, editing, layout checks, templates, Word import and exports all run on your own computer: no network, no sign-in and no credits. Only translation and web publishing use an account. Connect it in three steps 1. Install OmniDoc for desktop. Download the Windows or Ubuntu version from download.omnidoc.top. The installation folder includes the interface program OmniDocAI.exe (the examples below assume D:\OmniDoc). 2. Add the interface to your AI assistant. It is a standard local MCP server (STDIO) and needs no API key. Table 1 How to connect common AI assistants Assistant How to connect Codex Add [mcp_servers.omnidoc_native] to config.toml with command pointing to OmniDocAI.exe and args = ["--mcp"] Claude Code claude mcp add --transport stdio --scope user omnidoc-native -- D:/OmniDoc/OmniDocAI.exe --mcp Claude Desktop Add omnidoc-native under mcpServers in claude_desktop_config.json Other clients Any client that supports local MCP (STDIO): use the same command and argument 3. Ask the assistant to call omnidoc_get_udoc_schema once. If it returns the document schema, the connection works. Your first document: a weekly report from one prompt Use the OmniDoc document tools to write a project weekly report: a title, this week's progress, a two-column task table (Task / Status) and next week's plan. Read omnidoc_get_udoc_schema first, save with omnidoc_create_udoc, then render page 1 to check the layout. The assistant returns the file path and the layout check. Open the .udoc in OmniDoc to keep editing by hand or export Word or PDF, or simply ask the assistant for changes such as “set the body to 12 pt with 1.5 line spacing and a two-character first-line indent”. Where it helps most Weekly and monthly reports and project proposals: the AI drafts, you review, and the Word file is ready to send. Papers and theses: apply a journal or university template and let the AI keep the formatting consistent. Technical documentation and teaching material: editable equations, interactive figures, and a web page to share. Multilingual material: translate in one step with the layout unchanged.
