Translate Papers in Zotero: Let an AI Assistant Find, Translate and File PDFs
With OmniDoc's Zotero plugin, an AI assistant can search your library, translate a paper's PDF and attach the translation to the same item, then add notes and tags. Tool list, an example request and recommended settings for papers.
Translate Papers in Zotero: Let an AI Assistant Find, Translate and File Your PDFs
When reading papers in another language, the slow part is often not the translation but the shuffling: find the paper in Zotero, export the PDF, upload it to a translation site, download the result and put it back in the library by hand. With OmniDoc installed, an AI assistant connected to it can do it in one go:
search your library, translate the PDF and attach the translation to the same item
.
How it connects to Zotero
OmniDoc installs a plugin into Zotero desktop. While Zotero is running with the plugin enabled, an AI assistant connected to OmniDoc (Codex, Claude Code, Claude Desktop or any client that supports local MCP servers) can read and write your local library. The library stays on your computer; only the translation step uploads the PDF to the OmniDoc service.
What the assistant can do
Table 1
OmniDoc's Zotero tools
Tool
What it does
omnidoc_zotero_search
Search by title, author or year; returns title, authors, journal, DOI, abstract and the local PDF path
omnidoc_translate_file
Translate the whole PDF, with academic style, deep thinking and bilingual output as options
omnidoc_zotero_attach_file
Attach a translation, notes document or other local file to the item
omnidoc_zotero_add_note
Add a note to the item, such as a summary or key points
omnidoc_zotero_tag
Tag items, for example “translated” or “to read”
omnidoc_zotero_add_item
Add a reference (optionally with its PDF); an item with the same DOI is reused
omnidoc_zotero_open
Open the item in Zotero
One request for the whole workflow
Find papers on retrieval-augmented generation from 2023 onwards in my Zotero library, translate the most relevant one into Chinese (bilingual, academic style), attach the translation to its item, add a five-point summary note and tag it “translated”.
The assistant searches and lists candidates, submits the translation once you confirm, and attaches the translated PDF under the original item. Next time you open the paper in Zotero, the original, the translation and your notes are all in one place.
Recommended settings for papers
Academic style
: terminology and phrasing closer to how papers are written in the target language.
Deep thinking for difficult papers
: more careful reasoning on long, dense sentences, at some cost in speed.
Context-aware translation
: terms stay consistent across the whole paper.
Bilingual output
: each source page sits beside its translated page, with formulas, tables and figures in place.
Glossary
: enter the fixed translations used in your field first.
Setup
Install OmniDoc desktop from https://download.omnidoc.top/ .
Open Zotero desktop and make sure the OmniDoc plugin is enabled.
Connect OmniDoc to your AI assistant: https://omnidoc.top/blog/en/ai-word-excel-ppt-omnidoc/ .
Sign in to the OmniDoc app. Translation uses credits based on what is delivered; search, notes and tags run locally and use no credits.
Going further: draft a literature review
Once translations and notes are in your library, the assistant can use OmniDoc's document tools to pull the key points of several papers into a review draft, apply a journal or thesis template and export Word. Templates are covered here: https://omnidoc.top/blog/en/thesis-typesetting-templates-omnidoc/ .
